Profile: Respecting the Environment

Caring for the environment is another dimension of our commitment to the communities we serve. As the world's second largest food company, with our sister company Kraft Foods North America, how we produce and package our products can make an important difference.

We have incorporated best available technology in all stages of production in our plants resulting in significant improvements. For example, our Eastern European plants have shown decreases, per ton of production, in water consumption by -10.0%, wastewater generation by -9.5%, energy reduction by 6.9% and corresponding decreased CO2 emissions by 5.9%, over the past year. The recycling rate of total waste is now 55.3%.

By greatly decreasing the amount of material we use, and by utilizing new lightweight materials, we have reduced our packaging significantly over the past decade.

In Sweden, Kraft both reduced the packaging components of its Marabou chocolate tablets and eliminated aluminum by changing to a flowpack, which saves 140 tons per year.

Kraft Australia achieved a source reduction of 2,750 tons of glass by switching to lightweight recyclable polyester (PET) jars for peanut butter.

Dong Suh Foods, the Kraft joint venture in Korea, introduced new packaging for some of its instant coffee products using refill pouches instead of glass jars. This resulted in a reduction of 90% in the weight of packaging on a per unit basis.
